How to Find Furniture and Home Decor on Facebook Marketplace
Love high-quality furniture and home decor? Whether it’s vintage, antique, or classic modern furniture that you love, fb marketplace is a treasure trove of options. Find out how to get the good ones!
My goal has always been to design a home that feels elegant and inviting without overspending, and Facebook Marketplace has been one of my favorite tools for achieving that.
Over the years, I’ve found many special treasures on FB Marketplace, and readers have often asked for my methods. So in this post, I’m finally sharing my best tips for finding high-quality furniture and home decor on Facebook Marketplace.
Why Facebook Marketplace?
Shopping on Facebook Marketplace is a win-win. Not only is it budget-friendly, but it’s also a more sustainable choice. By purchasing secondhand items, you’re reducing waste and keeping perfectly good furniture out of landfills. Plus, you’ll often find unique, high-quality pieces at a fraction of the retail price.
One of the best aspects of shopping for secondhand furniture is finding vintage pieces that add character to your home. Vintage furniture often has unique details, higher-quality craftsmanship, and a timeless appeal that’s hard to find in modern mass-produced items. Plus, vintage pieces often fit beautifully in a transitional design style, blending traditional and contemporary elements.
Tips for Finding High-Quality Furniture and Décor on FB Marketplace:
1. Use the Right Search Terms
When searching on Facebook Marketplace, specificity is your friend. If you know exactly what you’re looking for, include as many details as possible in your search. For example, instead of searching for “coffee table,” try “wood coffee table” or “round marble coffee table.”
I love a comfortable transitional look with elegant vintage or antique pieces layered in. For that look, these are some of my favorite ongoing keywords:
- “marble table” – real marble is real marble, and this search gives end tables, coffee tables, sofa tables, dining room tables, and more…
- “vintage oil painting” – some of the most fun vintage items to find
- “ornate gold frame” – sometimes mirrors, sometimes picture frames
- “brass lamp” – real brass is sturdy and timeless
- “velvet armchair” – velvet chairs are elegant and comfortable
- “wood dining chairs” – you never know what might work as a desk or accent chair, as well
- “antique dresser” – these can serve as wonderful storage, side tables, and nightstands, as well as actual dresser drawers
2. Search Multiple Terms for the Same Item
People use different words to describe similar items. For example, a buffet might also be listed as a sideboard or credenza. Try variations of your desired item to ensure you’re seeing all available options. For a coffee table, you might also search “low table,” “center table,” or even “living room table.”
You can also search specific brands, like Pottery Barn, Visual Comfort, West Elm, Ethan Allen, and more. Sometimes the actual item is outdated, even from those brands, but it’s fun to see the different items from reputable brands at low cost.
If you know the style of furniture you want, start there, but be prepared to change it up. The very best pieces – true, restored antiques – are often listed by their actual style names. But the prices are high to match.
For example, I was recently looking for a “Gustavian” style dresser for a client. That search returned only one result, and it was a gorgeous antique listed at $3500. So I expanded and tried: vintage dresser, antique dresser, painted antique dresser, french dresser… And found one with the style I wanted for $150. It was a little rough, but I love a good makeover.
3. Save Posts to Train Your Search
When you save items you like, even if the item is out of your area or price range, Facebook’s algorithm learns your preferences and adjusts your feed accordingly. This means you’re more likely to see similar items in the future. Even if you’re not ready to buy, saving posts in the facebook app helps refine your search experience over time.
4. Inspect Listings Carefully
Always look at the photos and description closely. Check for signs of damage, such as scratches, dents, or stains. If the seller doesn’t include enough details, don’t hesitate to ask questions for additional information. Knowing the dimensions, material, and condition of an item will help you decide if it’s a good fit for your space.
Side note: if you are listing items to sell on marketplace, please include the dimensions and details! It will save you loads of time in fielding questions.
You can also click on the seller profile to see his or her seller ratings and other items for sale. This can be helpful both to know whom you’re dealing with and to maybe find more items you love!
5. Prioritize the Right Kind of Furniture and Accessories
Real marble and brass are beautiful, natural materials. If the item is the right size and shape for your space, these timeless pieces can last you for years.
Similarly, solid wood furniture is often a great investment when shopping secondhand. Even if the finish isn’t perfect, wood can be sanded, painted, or stained to fit your style (see all my furniture makeover projects here).
On the other hand, be careful with upholstered furniture, like a couch or loveseat. Recovering furniture is definitely possible, but it can be pretty expensive. Know your upholstery options before purchasing.
Rugs are an option, but I have personally had better success finding those on Ebay or Etsy.
6. Negotiate Respectfully
Negotiating is a common part of shopping on Facebook Marketplace, but it’s important to approach it with respect and tact. Here are some tips for successful negotiations:
- Be polite
A little kindness goes a long way! - Offer a reasonable price
Do some research to determine a fair market value for the item. If the seller is asking $100, offering $20 is likely to be seen as disrespectful. Instead, propose a modest discount, such as $80 or $85, and explain your offer if needed. - Bundle for discounts
If the seller has multiple items you’re interested in, ask if they’re willing to offer a discount for purchasing more than one. For example, “Would you take $150 for both the nightstand and the lamp?”
Additional Tips for Success
- Check Frequently: New listings are added daily, so check home decor and furniture on Facebook Marketplace often to snag the best deals.
- Expand Your Search Area: Widen your search radius to include nearby towns or cities. A short drive could be worth finding the perfect piece.
- Act Quickly: If you see something you love, message the seller as soon as possible. Popular items can go quickly.
- Consider DIY: If an item has great bones but needs a little love, don’t shy away. A fresh coat of paint or new hardware can completely transform a piece.

As I am preparing to redo my fence, I am interested in the design of the partial fence shown in your teal dining set makeover post. Is it possible for you to send a more detailed/larger picture of the fence to me at [email protected]? Any details about the design would also be helpful and appreciated. Many thanks.
Betty
Hi Betty, thanks for your kind words! The fence was already there when we bought the house, so we don’t have any plans for it unfortunately. You can find many more pictures of this, though, at the post about our exterior makeover and these other backyard posts. I hope this helps!
Oops! The request should say “teak, not “teal.”
Thanks for the awesome post rachel! I loved your tip on saving posts to train the Facebook Marketplace algorithm—it’s such a clever way to refine your search, and I’m already planning to try it this month! 😀
