Modern Mantel Ideas- Maison de Pax

With the recent near-arctic temps we’ve had here in central Texas (ok, so maybe it’s only got down to 21°, but that’s practically the same thing, right?!), I’m even more in love with fireplaces than I’ve ever been… They can be such an incredibly beautiful focal point of a room AND a gathering place for warmth and love; so they’re pretty much my favorite thing. 😉

If you have an outdated fireplace that needs a makeover or you don’t have one at all and are considering your options, here are some incredibly gorgeous fireplace ideas that have my head spinning right now.

As always when I share inspiration like this, I have worked hard to find the original sources of these images and give full credit to the owners. Please, if you have questions (or just want to show your support for these incredible spaces), visit the links below and show these talented designers some love!

Classic White Fireplace Surround Ideas

The classicist in me will always swoon for excessive white molding and trim work. Block paneling, board and batten, layers upon layers of mill work… sign me up. And a traditional mantel makes a wonderful shelf for artwork and decor.

I love when the decorative trim goes beyond the mantel.

Classic white mantels work in living spaces, of course, but did you know they make eye-catching fireplace designs in bedrooms, as well?

Painted Brick Fireplaces

I love painted brick not only because of its clean yet textured uniformity, but also because it is such a budget friendly update option! You can create a dramatic effect and achieve a contemporary fireplace with nothing but a can of paint. It’s hard to beat the texture and durability of brick.

And how about the depth and charm that this darker paint color provides? I love the color these homeowners chose for their brick surround!

Precast Stone Fireplace Surround Ideas

These precast stone surrounds add such an elegant, established sophistication to any space, and you can go super elaborate or rather simple… options abound. Most of the cast stonework are a cream or beige or even gray, but they provide visual interest with their shape, rather than their color. The architectural elements are stunning accents.

Rustic and Farmhouse Fireplace Makeovers

Whether you use a real hunk of reclaimed wood or fake it with a well-stained box, the chunky wooden mantel is a great look, especially for that modern rustic vibe. These function as the perfect statement piece when paired with stone or brick hearths and a wood-burning fireplace.

I love the tall natural stone hearth on this one.

Fireplace Surrounds with Built Ins

Whether its a living space, bedroom, sitting room, or dining room, I love the look of floor-to-ceiling built in bookcases paired with fireplace mantels. In our last house, we had one that was double sided, facing both our family room and our formal living room. I loved curling up on that sofa to read.

And our current primary bedroom has dramatic bookcases. See how I made it all look like one unit here.

I love this marble tile fireplace surround, too!

DIY Fireplace Surround Projects

Whether you have an outdated wood burning or gas fireplace… Or you have none at all and are hoping to create an accent wall. Here are some amazing DIY options. Look at this Venetian plaster; how elegant would that be in a great room!

Or how about this one. Can you believe it’s not cast stone but built from wood and plaster?

And what about this outdoor fireplace? They used an electric insert for instant coziness. Electric fireplaces are a great option if you want to add one yourself.

I even love how these creative designers used an antique mantel to create a faux fireplace. No chimney or fireplace insert or heat resistance needed!

So which kind is your favorite?! I think I might just need a home with five fireplaces so I can have one of each… that’s practical, right? Don’t forget to pin this for later!
