When to Replace Sofa Legs

Now I admit that these sofas may not be my style in general (they were Mr. Pax’s before we were married), but the original metal sofa legs have bugged me for years.

Now, after a quick afternoon project, they are much more cohesive with the rest of our living room furniture.

Whether your existing legs are simply not your taste or are broken (or, as in our case, both), this little tutorial will give you the makeover you need. Plus, it will work for chairs or loveseats, too! Before I begin, there are some things you may or may not already know:

  • Most furniture legs screw off
  • You can buy solid wood couch/chair replacement legs at your local big box store
  • The new set of legs may or may not screw directly into where your previous legs were (talk about an easy update!)
  • If they don’t, you can buy the receiver plate at the big box store, too (next to the legs)

Today’s tutorial is for those whose receiver is not the right size already OR you have a damaged receiver. Here’s how it works:

  1. Determine if the base of your couch can hold the new receivers (ours could not, as you can see). If not, find a piece of scrap wood (we used a 1×4) to mount onto the couch for stability.
  2. Mark your holes for your receiver.
  3. Predrill a large hole in the center (where your replacement sofa legs will screw in) and smaller holes for the screws to attach the receiver.
  4. Attach the receiver plate to your scrap board (or the bottom of your couch) and then attach the scrap board to the bottom of the couch, if necessary.

I finished my legs using this tutorial to make them match our Restoration Hardware wing back chairs.

It really was so simple (and made even simpler by the fact that my dad did it for me when he was visiting to help me unpack… talk about love! 😉 ); I just wish we’d done it sooner. I have my eye on some new couches, but until we’re ready to spend the money, these will do quite nicely.

If you have broken legs or simply don’t like the overall style of your sofa, try this! Actually, the same process can be applied to a footstool or ottoman, as well. Update the look of your furniture with high quality replacement feet and enjoy.

  1. Love the new look! I bought some of those same exact legs for a old buffet, but then began to second guess myself! LOL! I just might have to go back and buy them now:) Btw, love the pic with you relaxing by the pool with your glass of wine (on instagram). We have lots of family that live in Texas, and my hubby has been trying to get me to move there forever! I showed him the pic, and told him “only if my little space could be located somewhere in Texas that looked like this!” Have a great day Rachel:)

    1. Thank you so much, Alison! the truth is, I’ve only done tiny upholstery jobs YEARS ago… It just hasn’t been in my repertoire lately. If I ever do one, though, I’ll definitely document it for the blog! 🙂

  2. Your couch looks so much better! And I had no idea you could purchase legs at big box stores! We purchased an upholstered bed that looks almost exactly like the Crate & Barrel Colette bed with the exception of some very ugly legs. I planned to order some (and they were rather $$) but will now see what I can find locally. Thanks for the tip!
